The city police cracked down on the Chinese kite string (manjha) on Friday as teams from all the police stations of the Jaipur Commissionerate surveyed their areas and inspected all kite shops. While the extensive search was conducted, shockingly, not even a single unit of the Chinese manjha could be found in the search.  The cops now aim to conduct surprise raids at random shops to find out the if the manjha was actually hidden from cops and is being sold through other channels. A day after a 9-year-old girl died after sustaining electric shocks and burn injuries, the city police initiated a massive drive against the Chinese manjha at the behest of the state police’s Crime Branch.

“We had instructed the Commissionerate to take effective actions in this regard. The use of Chinese string in kite flying is not only harmful to birds and animals, but also to children and adults alike who use this string for flying kites. Even those travelling on two-wheelers are at a risk posed by the manjha,” said BL Soni, Additional Director General, Crime Branch.

As a result of the direction, every police station under the Commissionerate formed its own team that surveyed the areas. “All the teams carefully surveyed the areas and shops where items related to kite flying are being sold. Even in the outer areas, the same was carried out. An extensive search was conducted in well-known kite flying areas like those in the Walled City area. However, the team did not find even a single unit of banned Chinese manjha in the shops and thus no legal action was taken against these shops,” said Laxman Gaur, additional commissioner, further adding, “Now we will instruct teams to conduct surprise raids at these shops with the object to find out if they are actually using the banned items and hid them when the news about police inspection spread. Appropriate action will be taken against those found selling such items.”
