Jaipur: Bandh brings transportation services to a screeching halt

While the trains were stopped and many got cancelled, roadways buses were stalled while about 40 low-floor buses in the city were damaged by protesters.

Passengers across the state had a terrible time as transportation services remained disrupted on Monday due to the Bharat Bandh. While the trains were stopped and many got cancelled, roadways buses were stalled while about 40 low-floor buses in the city were damaged by protesters.

Premium trains like Jaipur-Delhi Double Decker and New Delhi-Ajmer Shatabdi Express were stopped at Khairthal. Along with other trains Bandra Terminus-Delhi Sarai Garib Rath was detained at Padisal station for more than 4-5  hours. The Ajmer-New Delhi Shatabdi Express was cancelled on Monday evening.

In the morning, at least 7 trains were stopped on Jaipur-Delhi route causing panic amongst passengers. The railway authorities could not help much and DRM Jaipur while informing about  trains being delayed, ended the tweet stating, “passengers are requested to cooperate,” and by afternoon cancelled 14 trains partially including Ajmer-New Delhi Shatabdi.

Meanwhile in Jaipur, the bandh supporters tried to disrupt the railway movementat Gandhi Nagar railway station, Mahesh Nagar and Tonk Phatak and stopped the trains. In Hindaun city, protesters removed the railway track even as police tried to control them and went inside the railway stations and damaged the property there. By evening, the rail traffic was restored and trains started reaching Jaipur by 6 pm.

Roadways

While train passengers suffered due to disrupted rail traffic, situation of Rajasthan Roadways buses was also no good. Buses were forcibly stopped on road. The situation turned so serious that Rajasthan roadways buses were officially stopped from entering inside Jaipur and were stopped before Shivdaspura so that there is no damage to life and property.

Low-floor buses

Low floor buses plying on various routes  had to face the heat of bandh supporters. Supporters carrying lathi and rods broke mirrors of many buses. Sources informed that about 40 buses were damaged and were stopped on road, leaving the passengers in panic.

Metro stalled

Operation of Jaipur metro was stopped between 11 am to 4 pm. Initially it was decided that metro will be stopped till 1 pm, however, seeing the violent spree of bandh supporters, it was later decided to stop the operations till 4 pm.

Tourism hit

The bandh had a negative impact on tourism sector as well. Merely 4,336 tourist could go to visit Amber fort on Monday, while on an average day the number is almost double. Similar was the state with other tourism sites like Hawamahal, Jantar Mantar etc. The tourist buses in the city also did not ply till Monday evening.  

In retaliation

At two places, people also retaliated the violent spree of bandh supporters. In Sikar when the bandh supporters were trying to disrupt bus service at Bus stand, people got into confrontation with them. Similarly in Benar,  when the bandh supporters forced a vegetable shop owner to close shop, he came up to confront them.
