Aam Admi Party and Kisan Maha Panchayat held a joint press conference on Monday to condemn suicide by a farmer reported from Nagaur. Demanding investigation and action against the officials responsible for harassment of the deceased farmer, the AAP leaders declared that ‘when in power, AAP government will have all cases of farmer suicide investigated’. “Manglaram Meghwal was forced to commit suicide due to debt. The state government, SDM and bankers are responsible for his murder and a case should be registered against them,”  said Devendra Shastri, state coordinator Rajasthan AAP.

A young farmer from Nagaur, Manglaram had his farm subject to attachment due to partly unpaid debt.

He had paid nearly two-thirds of the loan amount and was a recipient of the loan waiver scheme of the state government. The attachment notice though arrived prior to relief.

Kisan Maha Panchayat, national convener Rampal Jat, also came down heavily on the state government on the issue. “The CM is on a ‘Gaurav Yatra’ and farmer is heading for suicide. There is no pride in such propaganda but  ‘intellectual treachery’ that attempts to hide the ground situation,” Jat said. “Nearly 75 farmers in the state have met with untimely death due to poverty over last few years and the government instead tries to divert away from the issue,” Jat added.

Leader of the Maha Panchayat though said that the joint conference was no political alliance between the maha panchayat and AAP.
