A young boy who suffered multi-organ failure got a new lease of life at a city hospital where doctors treated him through CRRT (Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy). The patient Rahul, a 12-year old student from Pali district was suffering from severe shock, acute respiratory distress syndrome, acute lung injury and acute kidney injury for which he was referred to Jaipur and was admitted to the pediatric ICU at the hospital here.

Rahul was leading a normal life until he suffered from Scrub Typhus, an acute infectious illness caused due to bite of a mite, which in turn manifested into multi-organ failure. He was brought to the hospital by his family members in an unconscious state.

“On examination, it was revealed that he had multi-organ dysfunction with extremely low BP,” Dr Jitendra Goswami, Consultant Nephrologist at Manipal Hospital said. “The boy was extremely critical and required immediate medical attention. The most challenging part of the case was that he had immeasurably low BP, which is why we could not carry out regular dialysis. Hence, we recommended CRRT, a special type of dialysis,” he added.

CRRT is a blood purification therapy. It is done only on critically sick ICU patients whose blood pressure is very low and has many short and long-term benefits over the regular dialysis. It provides continuous removal of excess metabolic waste products from the blood, improves patient survival rate and increases the chance for complete renal recovery etc. It usually goes on for 24 to 72 hours, depending on a patient’s condition.

“In this case, CRRT was administered for 4-5 days. Timely intervention and high-end critical care devices like CRRT can make a lot of difference in the final outcome. After 3 weeks of extensive critical care, he was back from the deathbed, recovering and continuing his studies,” said Dr Jitendra.
