A new bill giving one percent reservation to five castes including the Gurjars was tabled in the assembly on Monday. Under this bill, five castes, including the Gurjars will be given one percent additional reservation with OBC reservation. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rajendra Rathore tabled the Rajasthan Backward Classes Reservation of Seat in Educational Institutions in the State and Appointments and posts in Services Under the State (Amendment) Bill- 2018.

Under the bill, Gurjars and four other castes will get the reservation of OBC. Also, a reservation will be given from one percent separately within the 50 percent limit while retaining their Most Backward Classes or OBC status.

Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje gave a green signal to the proposal on Thursday night. As at present overall reservation percentage in the state stands at 49 percent, the government decided to give one percent additional reservation to these communities. The government in December last year announced the creation of MBCs through a ordinance and included Gurjars, Banjara, Gadia-Lohar, Rebari and Gadaria in it. The sources informed that as per the ordinance these communities were identified as the most backward by the OBC Commission and on the basis of the commission’s report, they were given 1 percent additional reservation under the MBC category.
