Millions of litres of contaminated water from a  sugar factory has entered in Gangnahar and Indira Gandhi Canal of Sriganganagar district, which will affect eight districts of Rajasthan including Hanumangarh, Sriganganagar, Bikaner, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer. This drinking water reaches from Ganganagar-Hanumangarh to Jaisalmer. But, the water coming from Punjab contains several dead fish, snakes and other animals, which are dying because of the absence of oxygen in the contaminated water. The water got polluted due to leaking of molasses in the Beas River by a  sugar mill in Punjab.

The water in the canal is black and red in colour with foul smell of dead animals, therefore its supply to water storage tanks has been stopped as a precautionary measure. The poisonous water is also a threat to other animals in the area. Add to it its effect on the fertility of the fields. The district administration has banned the supply of water, but the supply is still continuing in the rural areas. The drinking water supply to Sriganganagar district is 50,000 kilo litre per day.

Speaking on the matter, superintendent engineer of PHED Vinod Jain said, “The department already has the storage of potable water which will be supplied to the public till the contaminated water issue is resolved in a couple of days. As the canal water is highly polluted and stinking, we are not supplying it for drinking purpose as a precautionary measure. The drinking water supply from the canal has also been stopped in Bikaner as well.” Samples were collected for examination for two consecutive days and have been dispatched to the State Pollution Control Board in Jaipur for testing. On the other hand, the Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh has also ordered testing and monitoring of canal-based drinking water supply in the southern parts of the state to prevent further contamination.
