Gehlot camp is jubilant over his appointment. So is Sachin Pilot camp.Gehlot aides feel that his elevation will ensure dominance of Gehlot’s coterie in Rajasthan politics. While Pilot camp believes that Gehlot’s migration to Delhi brings Sachin closer to the chief minister’s position if Congress comes back to power. The political situation has become favourable for Sachin even more with Bhanwar Jitendra Singh - another close aide of Rahul Gandhi and a contender for CM post - being shunted from Rajasthan to be the incharge of Odisha, which goes to poll next year along with Lok Sabha elections.
In the changed political scenario, Pilot looks firm and his body language suggests that he has the assurance of high command about his annexation as chief minister if Congress returns to power. In the recently held plenary session, Rahul Gandhi had hinted that the ‘grand old party’ is creating space for young leaders. The 40-year old Pilot, in his 4 years tenure has built up the party organisation strong enough to take on the incumbent BJP. The recent victories in the by-polls are just testimonies to the new revived face of Congress.
However, Ashok Gehlot has also been told to focus on Rajasthan. Gehlot held meetings with Rahul and Sonia Gandhi, where sources say that he was suggested to ‘focus’ on Rajasthan. The central leadership wants to contest the Rajasthan polls under the combined leadership of Pilot-Gehlot-CP Joshi. “In ticket distribution also,there has been a consensus between them that tickets would be given to winning candidates after the assessment,” said a party leader.
However, the two-time chief minister Ashok Gehlot is capable of springing surprises at the eleventh hour. His candidature for the chief ministership can’t be ruled out. He has a reputation of a ‘Magician’ who can play any trick to outsmart others.
