It had happened only once till now. On Tuesday, however, the gates at the Munabao “zero point” linking the Indian stretch along the International Border with Pakistan’s Khokrapar were opened for the second time after deliberations between the governments of the respective countries.

The urgency in opening the gates was to facilitate the repatriation of the remains of a 65-year-old woman from Barmer who passed away on Pakistan’s soil during her stay with her kin, there.

The mortal remains of the deceased woman, Reshma, a resident of Agasadi tehsil, arrived in Barmer on Wednesday.

The zero point gates on both sides were opened after a special request to facilitate the handover of the body, seven days after Rehsma’s demise.

“The gates were opened for a second time with special permission from the Central Government to bring the woman’s body via Khokhrapar to Munabao by road,” an official with Barmer administration said. Prior to this incident, the gates were opened when former foreign affairs minister Jaswant Singh Jasol had travelled to Pakistan with his convoy and returned by the same route after offering prayers in Hinglaj Mata Temple on the other side of the International Border.

In an earlier attempt to the bring the deceased’s body home, the Thar Express that runs between the two countries once a week, was halted for two hours at Khokrapar to facilitate the handover of the body. But, the papers couldn’t be processed on time. As a result, the gates were opened for road transit today after the formalities were completed.
