Independence Day 2018: 700-km human chain salutes martyrs in Rajasthan

Jubilant celebrations were witnessed in Rajasthan as people came together to celebrate 71st Independence Day. A programme ‘Shahadat ko Salam’ was started from Shaheed Smarak in Barmer to Sri Ganganagar on Tuesday and CM Vasundhara Raje took aerial view of the event. Tight security was in place for the 700-kilometre long human chain from Barmer to Sri Ganganagar.

In a first, more than 6 lakh people were seen holding hands during the event. ‘Shahadat ko Salam’ saw coming together of people from every walk of life. Full of patriotic fervour, people also engaged themselves in tying balloons on the ropes and held the tricolour throughout. With impeccable arrangements made by the Barmer district administration, the event went off smoothly. The army also joined in to be a part of this historic event in Polytechnic College Jalipa. An exhibition has been organised where the soldiers are deployed along with military tanks, guns, vehicles and rifles used in the wars to create battlefield-like scene. 3D India map and the 200-metre tall tricolour remained the centre of attraction in the engineering college. In Barmer, revenue minister Amra Ram Choudhary, state minister Ashraf Ali, district collector Shiv Prasad Madan Nakate, SP Manish Agarwal and various other officials reviewed the programme arrangements. Meanwhile at Jaisalmer Fort, hundreds of flags were hoisted all along the historic fort. Moreover, on the Trikuta Hill on which the fort is built, hundreds of balloons of orange, white and green colours were tied.

HM pays tribute

Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria, who was on a trip to Udaipur, attended various I-Day events on Tuesday. Kataria went to Shaheed Smarak Gallery situated at Town Hall and paid tribute to the martyrs. Many dignitaries including district collector Vishnu Charan Malik, SP Kunwar Rashtradeep, mayor Chandra Singh Kothari, UIT chairman Ravindra Shrimali were also presented.

Tricolour rally in Ajmer

A tricolour rally was organised in Ajmer from Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, in which people from different religions took part and raised patriotic slogans. Apart from paying tribute to the martyrs, their families were also honoured in the city. A programme of national anthem was also held at 1pm. Education minister Vasudev Devnani, mayor Dharmendra Gehlot, district collector Aarti Dogra and SP Rajesh Singh, along with other officials remembered the martyrs. A guard of honour was also given by the district police during the ceremony.

Shaheed Smarak Alwar

A programme was also organised at the Shaheed Smarak in Alwar. Military officers, district collector and SP were a part of the event. On the occasion, the widows of martyrs were honoured along with their families.
