“Johny, Johny, yes Papa! eating sugar no Papa!!” When 10-year old Shubhi from Ajmer recited this poem on the stage of Sushrut Auditorium in SMS Hospital, on Wednesday afternoon, it meant much more than a simple rhymn to her parents.

Not only Shubhi’s, parents of around 180 children were present in the auditorium. For them watching their kids speak was the utmost joy of life as their children were born hearing impaired.

“My mother told me that I could speak at the age of 3 but it used to sound like I was speaking in Chinese language. My speech was not clear due to profound hearing loss.Jab Main sun hi nahin sakti thi, to bolti kaise?, Akshita Kaushik, now 13-year old from Sikar told DNA.

Akshita and Shubhi were among the more than 400 children in the state who, once unable to speak due to hearing loss are now able to hear and speak after getting cochlear implant.

A cochlear implant is an eletronic medical device that replaces the function of the damaged inner ear. Unlike hearing aids, which make sounds louder, cochlear implants bypass the damaged hair cells of the inner ear (cochlea) to provide sound signals to the brain.

The first cochlear implant in the state of Rajasthan was performed in 2010 and till now total 489 cochlear implants have been performed. “Since 2011, for those who can not afford, it is being financed from Chief Minister Relief Fund,” Kalicharan Saraf, health minister said.  Out of these, 300 cochlear implants have been performed free of cost. In 2017 total 78 cochlear implants have been performed in Jaipur while overall 50 have been performed in Jodhpur and 40 in Bikaner.

Six cochlear implants have been done in Udaipur,” said Saraf.
