This is not a case like Veer-Zara but a resident of Jaipur has been languishing in a Pakistani jail for the last 36 years. Gajanand Sharma, a resident of village Maharkalan, missing for more than three decades, has been found in the Lahore jail.

This tragic story came to light when papers sent by the Lahore jail for verification reached the Samod police station area of Jaipur district.

His 62-year-old wife, Makhni Devi, is both elated about her husband being found and worried over the fact that he is in a Pakistani jail. She said after he went missing, she ran from pillar to post but could not lodge a police complaint as she was illiterate. Gajanand worked as a labourer and often travelled for work, she added.

“I saw tough days after his disappearance. I took up a job at a private hospital to provide for the family,” Makhni Devi said.

Meanwhile, when the police contacted the family members of Gajanand and informed them about him, the family was shocked to know that he is in a Pakistani jail.

However, after seeing the photo of Gajanand, his younger son Mukesh Sharma confirmed that the person in the picture is his father. Now, the family is looking for a way to get him back to India.

Gajanand has been missing since 1982 from Jaipur where he used to work as a labourer. On May 7, Gajanand’s son Mukesh got a call from his cousin, informing that his father is in the Lahore jail. After that, the elders of the area gave the information to Gajanand’s older brother who lives in Jaipur.

According to Mukesh, the documents from Pakistan did not mention the tenure of his father’s imprisonment and the reason of his arrest.

The family of the victim has demanded the Ministry of External Affairs to intervene in the matter by completing verification of documents soon, so that Gajanand can be released from the Pak prison.

The only silver lining in this tragic story is that verification of papers has been done and sent to the SP office.

POLICE SPEAK

Samode police offical Sher Singh said documents reached them for verification from Jaipur Gramin SP office regarding verification of Indian nationality of Gajanand Sharma on May 4. They then sent them back to SP office after completing the verification process.
