The quantum of Asaram’s wealth will probably go unaccounted. Cash received as donation, was put into shady deals and the same was multiplied several times. He also doled out loans and sought unthinkable interests, failing which he would have acquired the takers property. From a front office spiritual guru to a hawala dealer, asaram had several options of earning. The exact figure of his wealth will never come out in the open, it seems.

According to a PTI report on January 30, 2014, “The scrutiny of documents recovered during the raid has established that wealth of Asaram’s ashrams in the form of bank accounts and other investments including shares, debentures and government bonds (excluding land) is valued at Rs 9,000-Rs 10,000 crore,” City Commissioner of Police Rakesh Asthana told reporters.

“The value of land has not been included in the assessment of Rs 10,000 crore,” he said, adding the figures can escalate as there are many more documents still to be retrieved. It was at the age of 7 when Asumal Sindhi, now popularly known as Asaram, came to India from Pakistan’s Sindh province. At first, the family used to reside in Gujarat before moving to Ajmer in 1963 on a call of his relative Dodhi Ustad.

With no work at all and to meet family’s needs, Asaram, with his father Thaumal Harpalani worked as ‘tangewala’ in Ajmer and used to carry pilgrims to Dargah Sharif (a holy place in the city) from railway station. His ‘colleagues’ of that time recall him as a hardworking man who used to work a lot to make a living. As per people who worked with him or had seen Asumal Sindhi- the tangewala, say that he was the man that nobody would even give a second thought to. It was after he chose to be a spiritual guru and turned a godman, he got the limelight.

Another tangewala of that time who is now in his 70’s, recalls that Asaram’s tanga used to stand out of all as it had a cushioned seat. When he turned 15, he fled home and reached Gujarat’s Bharuch where he joined an ashram. With time, he changed and lived in several other ashram’s and met his spiritual ‘guru’ Lilashah, who named him Asaram Bapu.

No use of temporarily jails

As a precaution, the police had prepared two temporary jails to house the supporters of Asaram in the city to prevent any untoward incident. Barkatullah Khan Stadium and Umaid Stadium were chosen as temporary jails. However, kudos to the alert administration and cops, these jails went almost empty.
