Despite the state government’s efforts to encourage institutional delivery, tribal dominated Dungarpur is still witnessing child birth at home.

The government has launched many schemes so that people can be motivated to use hospital facility for delivery but callousness and lack of monitoring by the health department are not helping its cause.

At least a dozen government schemes like Janani Shishu Suraksha Yojna and Shubh Dhanlakshmi Yojna have been implemented but despite facility of free delivery at government hospitals, people in Dungarpur seem to prefer home delivery. Thousands of children are born at home ignoring the risk to mother and child. According to health department’s record between April 1 and October 1, 2017, more than 8,000 kids were born at home. These figures are enough to explain how government schemes fail despite providing facilities free of cost.

When asked, CMHO admitted that pregnant women deliver babies at home rather than using government hospital. He said that the department is making efforts to encourage people to adopt institutional deliveries. However, the question is when will this happen.
