Alleging discrepancies in the electoral rolls, civil society organisations on Monday demanded that the Election Commission hold ward sabhas to restore the names of missing legitimate voters. In a press conference held in Jaipur, it was informed by civil society organisations that as per examination made in Jaipur’s Hawa Mahal constituency by Centre for Research and Debates in Development Policy (CRDDP), nearly 14,356 of the total 41,826 households (34.2 per cent) were single-person household, but as per the Census 2011, the state has only 2.77-per-cent single-person households.

With 2.66 % households in Rural Rajasthan and 3.11% households in Urban Rajasthan are single member households, what’s interesting is that the Jaipur district averages of single member households are less than the state average. There’s only 2.41 % single member households in the district and 1.85 single member households in Rural Jaipur and 2.86 % single member households in urban areas. With these figures, prima facie it can be said that this exercise has not been an oversight, instead it reflects gross inefficiency and arbitrariness.

Kavita Shrivastava of People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) informed that a thorough check of some of the single member households was done, the visits were made in 41 such households in Shastri Nagar area, Bhatta Basti, Nahari ka Naka and in Harijan Basti Chanwariya and more than 90 missing voters with valid cards were found whose names were not on the rolls.

Social activist Aruna Roy said a similar analysis was conducted in Karnataka, following which more than 15 lakh voters’ names were restored and the EC extended the last date of finalising the draft roll to three weeks before the assembly elections. “The EC should immediately hold ward sabhas in the state to ensure that names of all missing voters are restored,” social activist Aruna Roy said speaking to media. Gujarat Independent MLA Jignesh Mevani  who was present in the press conference said that the EC should have had proactively conducted special drives in other states as well after it conducted the Karnataka exercise. The Dalit leader claimed that names of roughly 50 lakh legitimate voters have been found missing from the electoral rolls in Rajasthan.
