Prime Minister Narendra Modi is quite active on social media. So is, chief minister Vasundhara Raje. They both understand the power of social media thus put great emphasis on its use. However, her cabinet colleagues seem to have a different view. Nothing else explains their reluctance in using social media platforms.

While both, PM and the CM regularly tweet about government’s decisions, policies, schemes and other events, nearly half the state cabinet has not even bothered to open an account. There are 13 ministers who do not have a twitter account. Prominent among absentees on twitter are cabinet minister, Nand Lal Meena, Prabhu Lal Saini, Yunus Khan, Surendra Goyal, Dr Ram Pratap, Rajpal Singh Shekhawat, Babulal Verma and Dr Jaswant Yadav. Ministers of state, Krishnendra Kaur ‘Deepa’, Pushpendra Singh, Sushil Katara, Surendra Pal Singh TT and Kamsa Meghwal too have not opened account on Twitter.

There are others like Panchayati Raj minister, Rajendra Singh Rathore who has an account but till date he has tweeted only seven times. In fact, his last tweet was three years ago. UDH minister Sri Chand Kriplani too has an account but he mostly retweets. The only Gopalan minister in the country Ottaram Devasi and women and child development minister Anita Bhadel have accounts but remain idle. The ‘gopalan’ minister Devasi has not tweeted after March 4, 2015, while Bhadel’s last tweet was in April last year.

Gulab Chand Kataria is the second most senior minister in the government after the CM. He has two accounts but after condolence message on former union minister Sanwar Lal Jat’s death, there is no tweet from his account. Sports minister, Gajendra Singh Khimsar replied to congratulatory messages on his birthday March 25, last year then went quiet; even though he carries a smart phone and i-pad. Social justice minister, Arun Chaturvedi has become active recently.

The top tweeter in the state government is obviously chief minister Vasundhara Raje herself. She leads with 8,000 tweets. She also has the highest 1.88 million followers. She is followed by education minister, Vasudev Devnani with 14,200 tweets and Kiran Maheshwari 3,010 tweets. Devnani has 22,700 followers while Maheshwari has 15,700.

With social media being considered a powerful medium and outcome of the future elections hinges on effective campaign on it, indifference and lackluster attitude of BJP ministers is quite worrisome from party’s point of view. Six ministers do not have even 1,000 followers.

Interestingly, Minister Bansidhar Bajia has more tweets than followers.
