Issuing a cabinet circular, the Raje government has proposed one percent quota for five castes, including Gurjars, on Thursday. With this, the reservation quota in Rajasthan has reached 50 per cent — a legal ceiling set for quota in government jobs as per the Supreme Court rulings. However, the Gurjar leaders are not happy with the move and have registered their protest.

As per the circular approved, Gurjars, Gadia Lohar, Rebari, Banjara and Raika community will get one percent reservation under MBC (most backward class) in government jobs and government-run educational institutions. They also will be simultaneously enjoying quota under OBC, in which they are already notified.

By according the reservation, the government has complied with the apex court ruling that stressed for maintaining sanctity of 50 percent ceiling in reservation, and restrained quota benefits under a bill to the community in November.

The state government had brought a bill in the Assembly, increasing the present 21 per cent quota to 26 per cent under the OBC category, giving an additional five per cent reservation to Gurjars and other castes, but crossed the 50 per cent ceiling.

Taking a leaf from Gujarat, where the Patel community leaders seeking quota went against the ruling party, the BJP government in Rajasthan seems to be attempting to sooth the agitating Gurjars community. However, in several rounds of meeting held previously, the Gurjars leaders demanded five percent reservation and refused to settle for anything less.

"We have reached the point from where we had started. In 2010, we were given one per cent reservation and after over a decade-long fight, the government has given us the same. It is unjust and we oppose the cabinet circular. The community will teach the government a lesson in the byelection in Ajmer, Alwar parliamentary and Mandalgarh assembly constituency," said Himmat Singh Gurjar, spokesperson of Gurjar Arakshan Sangharsh Samiti.
