Sariska, the pride of Alwar, will now monitor tigers of the Tiger Reserve through the GPS systems imported from Germany. If the project becomes successful then more GPS devices will be imported. Moreover, the information about each tiger is also being prepared via a software as the danger of human intervention is constantly increasing in the Sariska forest area. These developments are being done under the Sariska Tiger Project, said sources.

Due to shortage of guards, there has been a problem of proper monitoring in the reserve. At present, there are 12 Tigers and two cubs in Sariska. In 2005, the Tiger Reserve was devoid of big cats, after which, the tigers were brought here from Ranthambore. Still, there is the risk of hunters as the security arrangements are insufficient.

In the incidents that have taken place during the past few days, Tigress ST5 is missing and the young ST11 died recently. The administration has also failed to tackle these problems. Worried by the declining number of tigers, the forest department is now adopting a hi-tech method to prevent poaching of tigers. To prevent such incidents, 6 GPS caller IDs will be imported from Germany.

In this regard, monitoring of tigers was also started via Mobile Tracking System, under which Cattle Guard had to deal with a lot of problems. Now, it will be quite crucial to train the guards for new GPS and Caller IDs. Wildlife lover Rajesh Siddha said that it is a good thing if Sariska is kept populated. It would be better for the country as well as Alwar. Sariska Tiger Project CCF Govind Sharan Bhardwaj said that for more effective monitoring of the tigers, now with VHF technology, GPS monitoring will also be done. Beat guards continuously identify the pugmarks and give the information through wireless control to Sariska, but there is a shortage of staff at present.

Only time will tell whether in coming days such efforts will populate Sariska with tigers or human intervention will keep on increasing like present!
