Two years ago, Jaipur collector Siddharth Majahan had to step in to clean up an incapacitated Jaipur Municipal Corporation’s act after the mass scale death of cows at Hingonia cow-shelter and unabated spread of seasonal diseases in the city. That was the tipping point for the then mayor Nirmal Nahata who had to step down after the utter failure of civic administration under his tenure.

The ghosts of Nahata have now turned up to haunt mayor Ashok Lahoti who seems to be grappling with insufficiencies in managing disasters and cleaning up for drains ahead of monsoons. The result is the same: Collector Siddharth Mahajan has had to step in and partake the role of the embattled JMC. This time around, Mahajan has tasked himself with checking the preparedness of the civic body in tackling the monsoons and to help prevent accidents due to fire.

“Back then, there was a dispute between Nahata and then JMC commissioner Ashutosh AT Padnekar. A similar tension has cropped up between Mayor Ashok Lahoti and JMC Commissioner Ravi Jain,” an official said. The battle for supremacy between the two is reportedly hampering the work of municipal corporation.

JMC has been held responsible for a series of fire accidents that has swept through the city, of late. Mahajan had now summoned the municipal officials as the chairman of District Disaster Management Authority and has directed them to adhere to the fire safety norms. “The Collector asked for a report from the municipal corporation regarding the issuance of Fire NOC to buildings within its jurisdiction,” an official confirmed the development.

The other front that the collector has opened is to resolve the problem of cleanliness in city. Mahajan reportedly helmed a meeting to discuss the status of desilting and cleaning of nullahs and storm drains, a JMC chore, which has to conclude before the monsoons set in.
