Assembly elections are more than a year away and there is no guarantee whether Congress will return to power, yet congressmen in the state have been behaving like proverbial julahas (weavers) over the post of chief minister.

The party has vertically split between two major camps of former chief minister Ashok Gehlot and PCC chief Sachin Pilot over who will be the contender for the post of CM if the party wins.

While, the two leaders have been shying from saying anything on the matter directly, but their supporters are unable to show similar restrain and party cadre is worried that this divide may actually hamper the party’s chances of forming the government next year.

After Deeg MLA and member of erstwhile royal family Vishvendra Singh took a U-turn and spoke in favour of former chief minister Ashok Gehlot; another senior party leader Dr Hari Singh who returned to the party after quite a while has reacted sharply and claimed that Sachin pilot would be the only contender for the CM’s post.

“If Congress returns to power in Rajasthan, Sachin Pilot would be the chief minister,” Dr Singh said. The veteran leader also advised Vishvendra that he should not allow himself to become pawn of somebody and refrain from making such statements about CM’s post. “Maharaja Surajmal was known to be a wise politician and Vishvendra Singh is his descendant,” he said.

Dr Singh also accused Vishvendra of taking U-turn on his earlier stance. “It was Vishvendra who had proposed Sachin’s name for the CM and got people to raise their hands in his support now what does he want from the leadership,” he asked.

Not one to sit quietly, Vishvendra returned the barb by asking Dr Singh where was the need for the former to drag his ancestor Maharaja Surajmal in to party politics. “If Hari Singh wants to become leader of the Jat community where was he when Jats from Bharatpur and Dholpur were fighting for reservation,” he quipped.

In fact, Vishvendra called for an opinion poll to decide the CM face and said that not just Sachin but former CM Ashok Gehlot and former union minster Dr CP Joshi too is the contender for the CM’s post. “Hari Singh is trying to be high command,” he said while taking a dig at the senior leader.
