Rajasthan’s proposal for setting up gas-based new power plants has been stagnant because of non-availability of gas.

Ministry of Power has said that the Central Electricity Authority ( CEA) has received number of proposals from various states for allocation of gas. However, due to drastic reduction in the gas production  none of the new projects has taken-off

These plants include four  plants of the state namely Chabra Combined Cycle  Power Project (CCPP)  of capacity of 330MW,  Dholpur CCPP also of 330 MW. Kota CCPP, of 330MW capacity and Keshorai Patan Plant which is of 1000MW capacity. All these plants were being planned by the Rajasthan Vidut Utpadan Nigam Limited.

The total capacity of these plants comes to 1990MW for which gas allocation is being demanded.

Of these, Chabbra, Kota and Keshorai Patan Plant were under the greenfield status while Dholpur plant is under expansion category.

Across country proposal of 21 power stations based on gas were received by central electricity authority in recent months .

The non-allocation of gas to these plants currently may not hamper the prospects of electricity generation of the state  but if this continues it will affect the progress of these plants . Since the demand of electricity is less across the country , the power generation is being done keeping in mind the current weather and agriculture condition.

This is however not the first time, in past too the gas-based power plants faced scarcity of gas while in 2013 there was a fear of price hike as the union government was discussing a proposal based on Rangrajan formula.

Notably, experts feel that gas-based thermal plants are more preferable than coal as they emit less pollution.
