A 38-year-old debt-ridden garlic farmer committed suicide by consuming poison on Wednesday in Deoli-Manji village of Kota. This is the third suicide by garlic farmer this year in the Hadouti region.
The deceased, Hukum Chand Meena, reportedly under Rs 13-14 lakh debt, was suffering from depression because of low prices of garlic in the market.
Meena, who owned 17 bigas of agriculture land, had produced garlic in 10 bighas but was intense stress due to garlic prices on a downward spiral.
Besides, Meena was under heavy debt as he had taken Rs 6 lakh loan on Kishan Credit Card (KCC) from Punjab National Bank, Rs. 50,000 from cooperative societies, Rs. 3.50 lakh tractor loan and Rs. 4 to 5 lakh from the private money lenders on a very high interest rate.
Meena on Wednesday consumed some poisonous substance and was rushed to MBS hospital where the doctors could not save him. Meena, who is survived by wife, four unmarried daughters and a son, was the sole breadwinner of the family.
The Hadouti region has earned a dubious distinction of farmers committing suicides due to crop failure and heavy debt. This is the third suicide by a farmer. Two suicides were reported in Baran and Ayana areas in April.
At least five to seven garlic farmers had committed suicide last year in the Hadouti region which produces a bumper garlic crop every year but the government has failed to take steps to ensure the farmers get fair price of their produce.
State agriculture minister Prabhu Lal Saini, who was in Kota last week denied any suicide by garlic farmer.
Police have lodged a case under Section 174 of Cr. P. C. in this connection and handed over the body to his family members after postmortem in the afternoon.
