Former IAS officer from Rajasthan could be new J&K governor

Rajasthan cadre officer of the Indian Administrative Services (IAS) Rajeev Mehrishi who retired in 2017, and is currently serving as the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) may be appointed as the new governor of Jammu and Kashmir.

Mehrishi has served in varied capacity during his career as a bureaucrat. Starting his career as sub-divisional officer at Ajmer in August 1980, Mehrishi worked through the ranks and served at important positions in the state like Principal Secretary Finance and Planning and Chairman of Indra gandhi Canal Project amongst many others. He was appointed the Chief Secretary of Rajasthan and was subsequently picked up by the Modi Government as secretary department of Economic Affairs. He had worked with three central ministeries namely agriculture, petroleum and overseas Indian Affairs. Subsequently he was appointed the Finance secretary in the Ministry of Finance and was then appointed the Home Secretary in the Central Home Department. It was during this stint that he had mutiple visits to Jammu and Kashmir and specially the Kashmir valley and closely followed the developments there.

It is believed that Mehrishi has full know-how of the nitty-gritty of Kashmir valley and thus can carry out the functions of the governor much effectively than others.
