For farmers: Rajasthan government extends garlic procurement

Raje government would purchase garlic from the farmers battling bumper crop for ten more days; the decision was taken on Wednesday evening

State government has extended the date of garlic purchase by 10 days. After a discussion taken at the level of chief minister, the date has now been extended till June 30, officials said. The deadline for garlic procurement was ending on Wednesday.

There was immense pressure on the state government to extend the date of purchase. Farmers of Hadauti region were demanding that the date of garlic purchase by the government should be extended claiming that the quantity of purchase by the government has been meagre.

Chief minister Vasundhara Raje is herself in Hadauti region, touring several towns in a whirlwind tour.The farmers in Kota, Baran and other areas of Hadauti are suffering a problem of plenty with a bumper crop of garlic bringing the price crashing down in the wholesale and retail market. The government has since stepped in started procuring garlic produce at the minimum support price. 

Department of cooperatives said garlic worth Rs 194 crore has been purchase from the farmers till June 18. The records with the department show that 16,000 farmers were benefitted by the government purchase. Cooperative minister Ajay Singh Kilak said that RAJFED had purchased Rs 194.52 crore Garlic under market intervention scheme from 16,228 farmers. 

With 28 centers across Kota, Baran, Bundi, Jhalawad, Chittorgarh and Jodhpur operational, 59,722 metric tonne of garlic has been purchased. He categorically stated that payments to the farmers whose produce had been bought till June 18 has been paid in full.
