Power companies have taken an initiative to realise chief minister Vasundhara Raje’s dream of pollution free Rajasthan. These companies have sought permission from Rajasthan Electricity Regulatory Commission (RERC) to develop Grid Sub Station(GSS) and other empty spaces for development of charging stations for electric vehicles.
The state has more than five thousands GSS. After RERC’s approval, the Discoms will prepare a business model for easy access to charging station besides earning them much needed revenue.
Notably, ever increasing vehicles are major contributor to pollution. In the state every day 4,000 new vehicles add to 1.45 crore vehicles already plying on roads.
Other states too are facing similar situation. In view of that, the central government has set the target of 40% electric private passenger vehicles and making public transport completely electric by 2030. But, this objective is achievable only when there are adequate stations to charge the vehicles. The Discoms want to put their 5000 GSS to good use for this purpose.
The RERC is likely to have a positive view. In fact, in its last tariff order, it was RERC, that had suggested Discoms to work towards promoting electric vehicles. The Discoms have now filed petitions to the RERC saying that they have plenty of space on main roads where charging stations facility can be extended to people.
