With the AICC plenary session over, focus has now shifted to who will find a place in the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the highest decision-making body of the party.

From Rajasthan, the names of Ashok Gehlot, Bhanwar Jitendra Singh and CP Joshi are being floated in inner party circles as top choices.

This is owing to their experience and efficiency; but more surprises could be in store as the party is focussing on Rajasthan, where assembly election is scheduled in the final quarter of the year.

In the session that concluded on Sunday, party president Rahul Gandhi was authorised to pick members of the working committee.

As per the constitution of the party, the committee comprises president of the Congress, leader of the Congress Party in Parliament and 23 other members.

The committee may have general secretaries, secretaries, joint secretaries, incharges and treasures.

Rahul, after being nominated as president, disbanded the previous working committee which had CP Joshi, Jitendra Singh and Mohan Prakash as members from Rajasthan. The committee was replaced by a steering committee of 34 members which included AICC general secretaries Gehlot, Joshi and Avinash Pandey (Rajasthan in-charge) from the desert state.

Sources added that Gehlot may be inducted into the working committee along with young face Jitendra Singh, a close aide of Rahul. CP Joshi, however, has chances of getting a berth in the panel, though his nomination hinges on his performances in Bihar and North East states general election where the party under performed.

Ashok Gehlot

Undoubtedly, the stature of Gehlot grew in the eyes of the party high command after the Gujarat assembly election results were out.

It was his strategy which made the party perform commendibly in terms of voter share as well as seats and ensure a graceful defeat.

In the plenary session, Gehlot’s proximity to Sonia and Rahul was quite visible. He was sitting in the front row by their side.

Jitendra Singh

Party workers were surprised when Rahu Gandhi’s close aide Jitendra Singh did not get the ticket for Alwar, which went to Dr Karan Singh Yadav.

This move was perceived as a plan to spare him for a bigger role in the party, either at the Centre or the state.

As the process of constituting working committee has started, Singh can find place in Rahul’s team. Jitendra Singh is one of members of Rahul’s youth brigade.
