The verdict in the Asaram case will again test the will of the state. Police and administration are concerned about large number of Asaram’s supporters who will be gathering in Jodhpur on the day of verdict. After the widespread violence and chaos that followed after Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim was found guilty, the state government has filed an appeal in the High Court and has urged it to pronounce verdict in the jail. The High Court has sought response from Asaram’s lawyer.

Asaram has been lodged in Jodhpur jail for four and a half years for sexual assault on a minor girl... The hearing related to this case has been completed in the trial court and the court has fixed  April 25 to pronounce the verdict.

During the period of four and a half years, a large number of supporters from all over the country have been continuously coming to Jodhpur when Asaram appears in the court. Local police administration suspects that large number of Asaram’s supporters are likely to arrive in Jodhpur on April 25. In such a situation, there can be problems in maintaining law and order.

Keeping this in mind, the state government has appealed to the High Court on Friday to pronounce the verdict in the jail. Asaram’s lawyer Mahesh Boda has opposed it and said there was no such provision. When the hearing can happen in a regular court, the verdict can also be pronounced there. After hearing both the sides, the High Court’s Judge Gopalkrishna Vyas and the judge Ramkrishna Singh’s bench asked them to present their answers in written.  Boda asked for some time for this. The bench has asked him to present the reply till Tuesday. The next hearing will be on Tuesday.

Asaram’s counsel Boda believes that the High Court can issue such an order, but there is a process for it. For this, they have to issue a notification first.  It was not followed in this case. The court cannot be shifted to jail just for the verdict.
