Farmer death: Harnawada sahaji cops claim garlic is the ‘usual suspect’

A 60-year-old man, claimed to be a garlic cultivator, allegedly died of cardiac arrest (heart failure) due to depression over not being able to get a fair price of garlic produce in Guradi village under Harnawadasahaji police station of Baran district on Friday. Police, however, denied that the deceased man was a garlic farmer and died of depression over low price of garlic in the market, they lodged a report in this connection under section 174 of CrPC and investigation is underway.

Ramkalyan Meena (60), claimed to be a garlic cultivator and a resident of Guradi village had left home on Friday morning for a nearby village Rampuriya and on the way on Eklera road, he collapsed at around 10 o’clock, SHO at Harnawadasahaji police station Ramhetar Pareta told. He was rushed to community health centre (CHC) where the doctors declared him brought dead, he added.

As per doctors, he is most likely to have died of heart failure (cardiac arrest). The body was later handed over to the family members after postmortem and actual reason of death could be said after the report, the SHO said.

His son, in his report, stated that his father cultivated garlic over around 7 bighas of land which he had obtained on annual rent for cultivation and had been under depression over not being able to get a fair price of the produce, the SHO said. The son also mentioned that his father had borrowed about Rs 5 to 6 lakhs, he further added.

But in the primary investigation, the deceased man was not verified as garlic cultivator nor that he was running under debt, the SHO said. In fact, the deceased man worked as a laborer (Haali) in an agriculture field owned by someone else and he himself owned hardly a biga of land having nothing to do with garlic farming, the SHO said.
