On the second day of the 4-day ‘India Stonemart 2019’ being held at JECC in Jaipur, the 2-day Jaipur Architecture Festival (JAF) was inaugurated on Friday. Being organized concurrently with the mart, the theme of JAF is ‘Stone as Vocabulary in Architecture’. Eminent architects from India and abroad are participating in the festival and sharing their thoughts and ideas with the practicing architects from Rajasthan and other districts as well as  teaching faculties and students of Architecture colleges.

On the occasion, keynote address was delivered by Vice President, Archasia Zone-A, Lalichan Zacharias. The theme of his address was ‘Stone-Frozen Poetry’. He said, stone is a versatile material created by God, which can withstand the test of time and outlast generations. Picking examples from ancient as well as modern architecture, Zacharias stressed on the adaptability of stone.

Some of the case studies he presented from ancient architecture, included sites at Badami, Aihole, Hampi, Pattadakal and Mahabalipuram.

Taking a leaf from Barcelona Pavilion and Portuguese National Pavilion, he threw light on how modern architects have gone back to embracing stone.
