In a complete waste of public money, the Department of Information Technology and Communication (DoIT&C) distributed bags and goodies for free on Day 3 of the Rajasthan IT Day celebrations in a bid to draw a huge crowd.

However, the day turned out to be a free for all as there was a rush for the gifts. So much so, that the police had to intervene to control the crowd. Youths, who participated in the event, were not chasing jobs but were seen running after the free goodies being distributed by the Department of Information Technology and Communication. Some of them were seen breaking the gates and misbehaving with women just to lay their hands on the free gifts. The police had to finally resort to a mild lathi charge to keep the situation under control. In addition, Akhil Arora, principal secretary, DoIT&C chose to skip the round table conference organised with India’s leading Chief Information Officers, in a bid to control the chaos on the road.

“One bag was kept aside for each start-up registered for the event. However, as many as four founders of each start-up ended up at the counter to receive the bag. Also, people, who were not associated with any start-up, gathered in the crowd,” a delegate of the event said.

Furthermore, medals of TechRush marathon were being distributed after calls were made to the winners, runners-up and others.

In addition, free tee-shirts were given to everyone who registered for the event.

Active participation

The 36-hour long hackathon and green-a-thon, that was a part of Rajasthan IT Day celebration, organised by the IT department saw participation from a large number of students. Several coders in almost 2,000 teams were seen developing solutions to make lives better for general public. “Each team has been given a choice of eight themes including Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, analytics, usage of application programme interface, brain-computer interface, e-mitra, bhamashah, and internet. They can use any one or combination of many to develop the solutions,” DoIT&C official said.

  • One bag given to each startup; medals given to TechRush winners and t-shirts given to all registrations.
  • “Goodies were purchased by the department through a tender, there were no sponsors,” said an official from DoIT&C.
