The decision of clamping Emergency by the then prime minister Indira Gandhi was to save the nation, not to keep her office safe and ironically those who are running government in dictatorial manner are calling her a dictator and observing a ‘black day’ on its anniversary, said AICC general secretary Ashok Gehlot slamming BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley for making anti-Indira remarks.

“The truth is Indira Gandhi clamped emergency to save the nation, not to keep her office safe. She is known for keeping intact integrity and sovereignty of the nation,” said Gehlot while defending Indira. Gehlot alleged that RSS and BJP are spreading lies regarding emergency.

Further, Gehlot criticised Modi for his tweets against emergency and accused him of damaging democratic values of the country. “Modi ji, the entire country knows how you have been undermining our institutions and curbing free speech. Your policy has been to suppress every voice that disagrees with you,” said Gehlot while taking a dig on the tweets Modi shared to criticize Emergency.

The two-time CM of Rajasthan also said that the constitutional values are under threat under Modi government’s rule and Congress is working towards saving them. “Such lofty words from our PM are in complete contrast of his actions. If the PM and ruling party decide to weaken democratic ethos by suppressing opposition, then it is certainly a dangerous scenario,” he said.
