Nation’s economy is on the right track, asserted union finance minister Piyush Goyal while speaking about the achievements of Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre in the last four years during a press conference in Jodhpur.

The finance minister commented on various topics including, petrol price hike, GDP growth, demonetisation and GST. Goyal was accompanied by union minister of state for agriculture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, union minister of state for law and justice PP Choudhary and BJP district head along with other Jodhpur MLAs. Addressing the issue of rise in fuel prices, Goyal said that the union government is working on a long-term plan to provide relief to people. He added that the international prices of crude oil have risen sharply in recent times which have impacted the prices of petrol and diesel in the country.

“The union government along with the states, is working on a long-term plan so that fuel prices could be reduced and controlled in future. The central government is using every penny of the tax collected on petroleum products for strengthening the economy and welfare schemes,” he said.

Taking a dig at the UPA government, Goyal commented that the BJP government has kept inflation under control, while the inflation rate during UPA government used to be in double digits. “India’s GDP has grown at the fastest pace in seven quarters at 7.7 per cent in January-March and the nation is now set to achieve even higher growth in coming years,” he added.  Reacting on BJP’s defeat in bypoll elections, Goyal said that though BJP did not get success in some bypolls, the opposition should not forget that the BJP and its allies have defeated them in 14 states and formed governments.

The finance minister also mentioned the benefits of demonetisation saying that the government is working towards ending corruption and it was an integral part of the effort. “Also, demonetisation has yielded handsome dividend through many channels,” Goyal said.

As per data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), GDP growth in the fourth quarter was 7.7%, as against 5.6%, 6.3% and 7% respectively, in the first three quarters, backed by rapid growth in agriculture (4.5%), manufacturing (9.1%) and construction sectors (11.5%).
