The Prime Minister Narendra Modi and union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari plans of having 100% electric mobility by 2030. The government is launching a dedicated policy as it wants automakers to move to 100% manufacturing of electric vehicles. But in Jaipur, the state government has banned registration of all kinds of e-rickshaws, which have become a popular mode of transportation, especially in a congested lanes of walled city.

The department of transport has also ordered that the e-rickshaw dealers will have to submit an affidavit with a declaration to conduct a 10-day drivers training programme for the e-rickshaw drivers.

This comes as a big blow to e-rickshaw manufacturers in Rajasthan, which sells around 100 e-rickshaws a day.

“We are ready to set up drivers training centre. The department should have given us sometime before banning the sale,”said owner of a e-vehicle company.

In Rajasthan, companies like Autolite, Caparo, Jangid and Mayuri are operating while auto major Mahindra & Mahindra is likely to launch soon.

“There is a provision in the rule which says that dealers will have to impart training to the drivers of e-rickshaws. Since it was not being followed new registrations have now been banned,” said a transport department official.

There are currently more than 4000 e-rickshaws in the city with majority of them being plied in the walled city.

The department argues that a a large number of them are running without registration number and also without driving licence.

“Since they are not trained. They cause accidents. They often don’t follow the traffic rules specially crossing the red light, sometimes resulting into fatal ones,” the official said.

A lot of people, including many foreign tourists use e-rickshaws while moving across between Chaura Rasta , Johri Bazaar and to narrow lanes of walled city.

“These e-rickshaws have become very popular in various parts of the city since they are slow moving, cost effective and are non polluting with ease of availability,” said Gajanan Sharma, a regular commuter.
