Despite tall claims by the Central government to bring e-kranti through Digital India campaign, hundreds of villages and towns of the border districts of Jaisalmer are still deprived of basic mobile network facilities. The internet services are still a far off dream as people have to travel several kilometres to avail even the basic telecom services.

Private mobile network providers are not much inclined to deliver services to remote rural areas because business their do not promise to be a beneficial deal. On the other hand, the Central government’s initiative for delivering mobile network in these areas, called ‘Project Marusthal’ by BSNL, is still awaited. BSNL had sent a proposal for the same to the Central government about three years ago according to which the deprived villages and towns were to be provided with mobile network facilities by installing towers.

According to the information, regional MP Colonel Sonaram Choudhary raised questions in the Parliament regarding the telecommunication services in these areas, after which the Central government had given instructions to BSNL for sending a proposal to them in this regard. BSNL Jaisalmer sent the proposal three years ago, but due to scattered population in these areas, the proposal could not become a reality. The government said that to set up mobile towers, at least 2,000 people must be residing in the village, but the geographical situation of Jaisalmer district is such that people here reside in small clusters due to cattle rearing.

District telecommunication engineer of BSNL Jaisalmer Ramesh Chandra Vyas said that discussion regarding ‘Project Marusthal’ takes place in every meeting of the department, but no work has been done so far due to the scheme not getting approval from the Central Government. Vyas also informed that continuous correspondence is being done with the Centret and the department will immediately commence the work as soon as the government approves the project.
