In Hanumangarh, the district sharing border with Punjab, police and drug control department made a big seizure of more than 4 lakh tablets of opioid based painkiller Tramadol worth Rs 21 lakh.

The seizure includes more than 2 lakh tablets of alprazolam and 118 bottles of codeine based cough syrup. The raid was conducted on Thursday night and it took more than seven hours for teams to count tablets.

Police have arrested one Shivanu Grover (23), a resident of Sadul Shahar, who established himself as a medical representative in a private pharmaceutical company.

Police presented him in front of court on Friday from where he was sent to police remand for 4 days.

“Hanumangarh junction police got the information that Shivanu has stocked a lot of intoxicating medicines at a house he had taken on rent 15 days back in Shyamsingh colony,” Mohammad Anwar, investigation officer at Hanumangarh town police station told DNA.

“We were amazed as the police team raided the house and entered the room. There was cache of lakhs of tablets,” he added.

Police gave the information to drug controller department. “During primary interrogation, the accused admitted to receive the stock from Ambala in Haryana and he used to supply it to individuals and retailer in Hanumangarh,” Sukhdeep Kaur, drug inspector told DNA.

“On the report of Ranveer Meena, SHO, junction police station, case was registered under NDPS for storing alprazolam and codeine based cough syrup.

As tramadol is not covered under the NDPS Act, despite being a psychotropic medicine, a case was registered under the Food and Cosmetics Act,”she added.

TRAMADOL CAN STOP BREATHING

Tramadol is a narcotic-like pain reliever and it is used to treat moderate to severe pain. Tramadol can slow or stop breathing, and may be habit-forming. Misuse of this medicine can cause addiction, overdose or death, especially in a child or other person using the medicine without a prescription. Taking tramadol during pregnancy may cause life-threatening withdrawal symptoms in the newborn. Fatal side effects can occur if you use tramadol with alcohol, or with other drugs that cause drowsiness or slow your breathing.
