Sleuths from the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in Rajasthan chased down a 'ghost' and nabbed him. While investigating a fake arms licence case, the ATS stumbled across the name of one Deepesh who was supposedly dead. There was even a death certificate to prove it.

However, ATS found Deepesh to be very much alive.

"Deepesh is based in Mumbai and involved in the real estate business. While investigating the matter, we learnt of his death, but found loose ends in the case which we started unravelling," an ATS officer said.

Further probe only led to more confirmation of his death and investigation hit a wall when the team found a death certificate. "Our intel, however, continued to suggest he was alive and on the run," the officer said.

They were right.

ATS arrested Deepesh on Tuesday, and during interrogation, he said he bought the fake arms license only to buy a weapon for self-protection. It was allegedly done by posing as a BSF (Border Security Force) personnel. "He said the real estate line presents challenges," a source said, "and the weapon was to counter threats from gangsters. He has denied having any criminal background but has failed to answer why he did not go for a legal license."

Deepesh also said the death certificate is not his. "In the last six months, the accused has changed his address a dozen times," an officer. "He has also changed his mobile numbers repeatedly; that's why cops couldn't track him. Our team made multiple visits to Mumbai and Pune to locate him."

Now sleuths are trying to ascertain whether the death certificate is fake and how he managed to lay his hands on it.

The Rajasthan ATS busted a network involved in distribution of fake arms licenses in September 2017. A four-month long recce and surveillance was conducted under Operation Zubeida. Initially, three men were arrested for issuing fake licences against the names of BSF and army officials. So far, the ATS has arrested 50 men from Rajasthan and a few from Gujarat. All licenses were traced back to residential addresses in Jammu.
