It is a coincidence that I have completed 25 years in Jaipur this month, just as DNA completes its 10 glorious years in the city. Rajasthan has seen rapid changes over the past decade. Since change is synonymous with growth, we have grown and embraced newer things, trends and ways of life.

Most of the changes that we have witnessed in the state — and Jaipur — have been good, apart from a few that do bother me at times. But I would like to focus only on the positive ones. Rajasthan has enticed the world as an inspiration for centuries. But over the last 10 years, the limelight on our state has been overwhelming. As far as fashion is concerned, Rajasthan has inspired many international brands in the recent past. We have seen many influences and interpretations of our colours, art, heritage and culture on the ramps and shoots of designers in Paris, London and New York. The forts, landscapes and glory of Rajasthan has attracted the brides and grooms to be wed as kings and queens. The most coveted state for destination weddings, Rajasthan has a lot to offer.

Fashion in the state has also evolved at an astounding pace. The villages of Rajasthan were forever fashionable, but the cities have seen a beautiful change over the past years. Men and women have started to experiment and now proudly flaunt the best of fashion. Style is transcending and marketing is growing in a very big way. Just as the state inspires many fashion trends across the globe, a number of big brands are heading here to introduce themselves to its people. Over the recent years, international and national designers of repute have opened shop in Jaipur, making it a melting pot of styles — bringing together the colour of the desert state and the neat silhouettes of the West.

Rajasthan is also synonymous with royalty, whose styles and tastes have inspired a generation of fashionistas. Somewhere between the past and the present, fashion moved from regal to casual. But as newer styles emerge and the youth retraces its roots, people are also looking back at the past and at royal inspirations. From the gota-patti to the extremely elegant chiffon sarees, fashion is returning to styles that were synonymous with the state. Where men’s fashion is concerned, a lot of people are embracing styles inspired by aristocratic wardrobe staples, including bandhgalas and breeches that have made an impact on the runway and have been increasingly popularised by celebrities. In keeping with the same thought, my designs focus on the modern maharaja look, which combines international trends and Indian royalty — just like the spirit of the Pink City!

As Italy is known to have the best dressed people, I would love to have the same to be known for Rajasthanis. And I am so glad that I am a part of that journey.
