The state government is mulling over purchase of the produce from those more than 50,000 garlic farmers in the state who were not considered despite their online registration, said Union minister of state for agriculture, Parshottam Rupala.

He said that the government has put the matter in front of NITI Aayog and central government with its experts trying to find out a way to benefit all the garlic farmers. Rupala was speaking during a press conference held on Thursday in the State Institute of Agricultural Management, Durgapura.

In its Thursday edition, DNA highlighted the issue that the state government has bought garlic from 25,017 farmers this season while 75,861 garlic cultivators were registered for the purchase by the government. Given the cold shoulder from the government, the garlic cultivators in Hadauti region are now demanding that the purchase of garlic should be restarted. The date of purchase ended on June 30 and recently in Sultanpur (Kota) farmers demonstrated at the sub tehsil office demanding re-starting of garlic purchase.

“It has come to our knowledge that despite online registration, purchase of garlic from around 50,000 farmers could not be done because the last date ended on June 30. We have informed about the matter to NITI Ayog and central government. Our government is committed to benefit each and every farmer and I assure that no farmer will be left to suffer,” said agriculture minister Prabhu Lal Saini.

It is worth mentioning that in a first, this time the registration of farmers was done online and the farmers were facilitated with online payment. On the increase of MSP Rupala said that the decision of the central government is historic. He said that till now our agricultural policy was limited to increase in production, but for the first time, the government has taken significant steps to increase the income of the farmer. He said that the increase in MSP is an example of government’s commitment to the farmers.
