Nokha in Bikaner is witness to an interesting battle. Candidates fielded by BJP and Congress are facing each other for the third time. Congress has fielded Rameshwar Dudi; its senior leader, who has served on various posts from pradhan to MP. He was the leader of opposition in the assembly in the outgoing government.

A vocal BJP baiter, Dudi name is also considered as a contender for the chief minister post. BJP has fielded Bihari Lal Bishnoi, who had been a rebel against BJP in 2013 polls. Dudi and Bishnoi have a history associated with the seat - they are facing each other the third time - on a seat that was earlier reserved, but became a general seat in 2008 after delimitation.

Twice it was in a triangular contest, but this time it is a straight battle between the two. Bishnoi was the BJP candidate and Dudi from Congress in 2008 elections, but the election was won by an independent Kanhaiya Lal Jhanwar. 2013 saw the three again in the contest. This time Dudi won and independent Jhanwar and Bishnoi who was also an independent on being denied a ticket too lost. BJP faced a miserable defeat then. This time Dudi has helped Jhanwar; albeit after some controversy; to fight as Congress candidate from Bikaner East and he faces Bishnoi who has had a homecoming into BJP.

Adding to the spice is Indu Devi, a candidate from Hanuman Beniwal’s party - Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP). There is talk in the constituency that Beniwal is not supporting his own candidate.

The biggest issues of this constituency are farmers’ issues and water. Nokha has a huge mandi that is currently thronged by farmers with peanut crop. The slow process of procurement is only serving to add to the ire of farmers of the region. There is a demand for proper drinking water supply in the constituency and Congress promises to solve it when it comes to power - as does BJP.
