Like any other state in India, caste politics is nothing new to Rajasthan and thus there is no respite for chief minister Vasundhara Raje, who has witnessed bloody agitations by the Gurjars and the Jats in the past. She had dealt with both the situations firmly, with wisdom and often with an iron hand.

However, the Rajput agitation that began after the death of gangster Anandpal Singh in a police encounter and the violence following it in his village Sanwrad, has strangely united the Rajput community. Gangster Anandpal was a Ravna Rajput and after his death has been made to look like an icon.

The Rajputs have been demanding a CBI probe into his encounter and had even planned a massive rally in Jaipur to press for their demand.

However, home minister Gulab Chand Kataria had categorically stated that the state government would not order a CBI inquiry against those brave policemen who had risked their lives during the encounter.

On this issue, chief minister Vasundhara Raje used wisdom and Kataria stood by moral and emotional issues, while defending the state’s police on the issue of CBI inquiry. It was a difficult decision, but Raje agreed when the BJP’s Rajput MLAs, particularly former minister and late Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat’s son-in-law Narpat Singh Rajvi, chose to write to the BJP president Amit Shah on the issue.

This apart, on the other hand only one of the former royals, Padmini Devi of the erstwhile Jaipur royal family, stood by the community’s demand.

In one stroke, Raje made it clear that she does not nurse any ill-will against the Rajputs and her government believes in transparency. Another Rajput minister in Raje government, Rajendra Rathore, played a key role during the entire episode.

The state government also deputed a Rajput, DG-level police officer Ajit Singh Shekhawat, when the community assembled at Sanwrad for the condolence meeting, to handle the situation.

The police also made a visual presentation to the media where top police officers including additional director general of police, Pankaj Singh, another Rajput officer, made a presentation in which it was proven that Anandpal was given a chance to surrender before he was killed after he opted to resort to firing at the men in khaki.

Thus, before allowing for CBI inquiry, the state police had collected enough evidence, frame-by-frame, to prove that it was not a fake encounter.

The CBI, in all likelihood, would stand by the state police’s version. The probe would also deal with the violent protests at village Sanwrad and those (most of whom belong to the agitating community) who played a key role in spreading violence.
