History and fashion have a tendency to repeat themselves. And, Rajasthan for last several decades has had a history of alternating between two main political parties in government formation. By this logic, 2018 should see Congress forming a government.

There is euphoria and anticipation among Congress cadre and leadership as they wait for polls in anticipation of a win. But infighting, conflicting statements and protest against own leadership showcase the internal crisis the party in Opposition is facing. The latest public display of conflict is – the burning of Congress state in charge Avinash Pandey’s effigy by party workers. This was preceded by a statement by former union minister Lal Chand Kataria terming Ashok Gehlot an ideal choice for chief minister and Pandey terming Kataria’s statement ‘irresponsible’.

A former minister is quick to point out that there have been instances when leaders have issued statements in favour of Sachin Pilot as the chief ministerial candidate. Vishvendra Singh, Hari Singh and many others did it. Pandey never asked them to follow party, discipline and line. But one statement in favour of Gehlot elicits such response, he rues. Two-time chief minister Ashok Gehlot has also not helped the party cause. He has been fanning flames of controversy by making oblique statements that are seen as questioning Pilot’s claim to chief ministerial berth.

The Mera Booth Mera Gaurav meetings also could not graduate beyond being political posturing for ticket seekers. The basic purpose of preparing ground level booth worker remains to be achieved.

The Congress, under state chief Sachin Pilot has donned the mantle of a ‘government in waiting’, something which they believe will happen as ordained by historical trend. Gehlot, however, has cautioned them by reminding about 1993 elections, the year when Congress lost out a chance to form a government to BJP stalwart Bhairon Singh Shekhawat who garnered support of independents to club one in place despite his party not being in the majority.

The need of the hour is for Congress to gear up and set its house in order as the internal skirmishes can affect not only its health, but also harm poll prospects.
