The lists of properties made during the agreement with the central government regarding the distribution of properties of 18 princely states of the state have disappeared. The Rajasthan High Court had issued an order to the Centre in 2015 to make this list public and has once again on Wednesday asked to do the same in four weeks.

A divisional bench of Chief Justice S Ravindra Bhatt and Justice Indrajit Singh gave this order while hearing a PIL filed by the Public Property Protection Committee. However, the Centre has already informed the court that they have only the printed copy of the covenant. The original copy was sent to the state government for verification decades ago whereas the state has denied having any such copy.

PN Mandola, associated with the Committee, in a 2015 petition had informed the court that during the formation of Rajasthan, there was an agreement between 18 princely states and the government in 1949 for the division of the princely held properties. Under this agreement, some of the properties remained under the ownership of royal families while the rest laid with the government.

The petition states that list of assets has not been made public due to which settlement of ownership of properties is not possible. Due to lack of records, members of the former royal family still hold many properties originally ceded to the central government.

Sawai Mansingh Trust, a party in the case argued that only the President has the right to interfere in the case under provisions of the Constitution and hence the petition should be dismissed. Mandola countered by saying the intent of the PIL is to request the release of the property list and not the property dispute.
