Notwithstanding suicides by the IIT and medical aspirants, Kota, famous for its coaching classes, is witnessing another disturbing trend of surge in juvenile crimes.

With more than one lakh students living on their own in private accommodations, many are falling prey to crimes because of the lure of fancy mobiles and other gadgets. The data of crimes in the city show that 60 per cent of them were committed by minors under the age group of 18. This means that out of 10 crimes, six have been committed by juveniles.

What is shocking is that some of the crimes are of very heinous and horrific nature. Recently, seven people were brutally killed one Vijay Singh in the railway colony and among the main accused were three minors. The heinous nature of the crime can be gauged from fact that the victim who was killed in full public view, had 38 wound marks on his body.

In another incident, which occurred in Kundahi area, three juveniles looted Rs2 lakh from a businessman while in a case of vehicle lifting in Antpura, a minor was among the arrested, who had stolen a truck and a jeep.

Without no parental control and guidance, some of the students who are doing well in studies, are easily recruited by gangs. 11 vehicles were recovered from a juvenile, who it is said, could steal a vehicle just for a kachori.

According to Kota SP Anshuman Bhomiya, “The data of the past five years released by Juvenile Justice Board show that a total 15,409 cases in the entire state have been registered against juveniles. Jaipur with 2,220 cases was first while Kota stood at number two with 1831 cases registered.”

Bhomiya, however, added that the number of cases which have not been registered are more than the registered ones as FIRs are not filed in view of the tender age of the juveniles and also due to the legal aspects.
