Chairman of National Commission for Schedules Castes, Ram Shankar Katheria, has expressed displeasure over non disposal of cases related to encroachment on the land belonging to the the Scheduled Caste (SC) by influential people. Katheria was, on Wednesday, reviewing social schemes meant for scheduled castes with social justice and empowerment officials.

He issued directions to the officials to dispose off such cases within a time frame of 15 days and forward factual report to the Commission.

Katheria, while holding a meeting with chief secretary DB Gupta and higher officials of the department at the Secretariat, directed them to benefit SC people, on a priority, with ongoing social security and welfare schemes.

He also added that no innocent will be punished for the violence erupted on April 2 during Bharat Bandh protests which ST/SC organisations staged against the Supreme Court ruling.

He also appreciated Raje government’s swift action to form a ministerial committee immediately to examine cases registered during the violence.

“Holding special camps in urban and rural areas the department issues lease deed (patta) to the SC people who are landless and cases related to land revenue involving them should be disposed off with seriousness. The Commission has received complaints in regard to encroachment by influential persons on the property of SC and such cases need to be disposed off within 15 days,” he said.

The chairman, in the course of the meeting, also took feedback from the officials over death of sanitation workers while cleaning sewerage and drains.

The officials were directed to book negligent officials under SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act if such incident occured anywhere in the state.
