Dengue-free Rajasthan? 1 dies, 2 suspected of disease in Banswara

At the time when the state health department is running statewide campaign ‘Dengue Free Rajasthan’, a woman in Talwara block of Banswara district died of dengue, while two other patients suspected to be having dengue from the same village have been referred to higher medical institute. These fresh cases have raised questions over the health department’s efforts and seriousness for controlling seasonal and mosquito-borne diseases in the state.

As per information, the woman was suffering from fever for quite some time. Her son admitted her in a local private hospital from where she was referred to Udaipur. According to the son of the deceased, “Doctors at the hospital said that she showed symptoms of dengue and before the investigation report could come in, my mother died on Wednesday.”

Health officials on the other hand, instead of taking the death on record, are trying to distance themselves from what the reports have revealed and what the doctors are saying. Block Chief Medical Officer Dr Deepak Pankaj who visited the place admitted that according to the private hospital report, the patient had developed dengue symptoms, but he also claimed that it cannot be said that the death was triggered due to dengue.

It is worth mentioning that the state health department has launched a campaign ‘Dengue Free Rajasthan’ at the start of this month.

During the one-month-long campaign aiming to prevent spread of the disease, the health department with help of other government agencies including municipal bodies, claims to be taking measures to prevent mosquito breeding by destroying mosquito breeding sites. Under the campaign, the officials have been directed to conduct fever survey, source reduction (mosquito breeding), blood slide collection, anti-larvae activities. The survey will conclude on September 30
