Death compensation cannot be spent on wedding ceremony: Rajasthan High Court

While rejecting the petition, the court said that the compensation money was given for special security purpose. It cannot be spend on wedding ceremony.

Rajasthan high court has said that compensation for the death of earning person of a family cannot be allowed to spend on the wedding ceremony. Justice SP Sharma has asked social justice department to arrange facilities for the marriage of the daughter of a widow.

The widow Phooli Devi and others had filed a petition requesting premature withdrawal of fixed deposit of Rs 2.75 lakh received as compensation following her husband’s death in an accident. The court was informed that she had already withdrawn Rs 4.75 lakh.

While rejecting the petition, the court said that the compensation money was given for special security purpose. It cannot be spend on wedding ceremony. 

Justice Sharma said that lavish weddings have become a fashion. Everyone wants to outdo other person. A family’s status  in the society is judged from money spent on wedding. Hence, people have been unnecessarily losing their wealth. The court said that central and state governments should enact a law to stop extravagant expenditure in weddings considering that in the ancient time weddings took place in temples and now there is provision of court marriage.

Petition Rejected
