It was meant to be a peaceful gathering of Rajput community to condole the encounter of gangster Anandpal Singh. By evening, when the crowd had started to dwindle in Sanwrad and the police had started to wipe the drops of perspiration sitting on their brows, a violent streak in a section of the attendees sparked an all-out clash with the cops who had drawn up a secure perimeter around the venue as a preventive measure.

What happened next in the following couple of hours, forced the government to lock down the area and impose curfew to restore order. According to sources, trouble began after failed round of talks between the administration and the community leaders who reportedly took out their anger on the railway tracks and tried occupying them. Police fired tear-gas shells which enraged them further leading to no-holds-barred clash, arson by the mob and firing by cops to counter the sudden attack.

An official said that some of the police personnel’s fire arms are missing after the chaos. There were reports of missing cops, including an unverified information of a trainee female cop being abducted and subsequently released. Home minister Gulab Chand Kataria claimed later that none of the cops on the team are missing. The grievously injured have been referred to SMS Hospital in Jaipur.

“Curfew is being imposed in Sanward and if the need arises it might be imposed in other areas too,” Kataria said.

One civilian dead

Jaipur: According to reports, one Lal Chand Sharma who had attended the meet at Sanwrad lost his life in the violence. The deceased is believed to be from Haryana, sources said. The government went into a late night huddle to come to terms with the extent of the violence that shook the police and administrative brass. CM Vasundhara Raje and home minister GC Kataria took stock of the situation after which it was decided to impose curfew in the area and block internet in the adjoining Churu and Sikar districts. Internet ban is already in place in Nagaur.

‘CREMATE BODY’

  • The state human rights commission chairman has issued directions to the government to arrange for funeral of the deceased gangster. The panel has given a 24-hr deadline to have the body cremated.
