What was meant to be a noble initiative of spreading awareness about cancer, ended up disrupting the treatment of cancer patients and roiling the kin and staff of the Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Jaipur. The Rajasthan Royals team management had collaborated with the SMS Medical College, Jaipur and the Tata Trusts to engage cricketers practicing in Jaipur in spreading awareness about cancer screening.

The irresponsible behaviour of the bouncers and vainglory of the team management, however, led a to a siege-like situation at the cancer unit of the hospital, where even the staff on duty assigned to the care of patients were denied entry. The ruckus happened before the three of Rajasthan Royals team members were to visit RK Birla Cancer Centre at the SMS Hospital. It was during the OPD time on Wednesday morning when they were scheduled to get screened for cancer.

RR Bouncers not only restricted the entry of patients at the cancer centre, but also cordoned off the whole corridor on the ground floor. They even flexed their muscles and didn’t hesitate to stop the hospital staff from going about their chores.

“Despite being the centre in-charge, I was stopped by the bouncers. They asked me not to move around. I told them they have no right to stop my movement in the hospital and it was my duty to take care of patients.” Nisha Sharma, in-charge nursing of RK Birla Cancer Centre said.

“I have come here for my regular chemotherapy, but as you can see I am standing outside the gate since last hour as these men (bouncers) are refusing us entry,” Savita (name changed) a 42-year old breast cancer patient told DNA. “Hum yahan apni bimari se majboor hokar aaye they, hamen kya matlab agar koi bada aadmi yahan aaya hai. Pata nahin kitni der me ye log jaenge aur humen ilaj mil sakega (We arrived here because of our ailment. Why should our treatment get affected if a VIP is here?),” she added.

Moni Verghese, nurse, surgical oncology, told DNA that a bouncer came by and pushed her back when she was walking through the corridor. “His behaviour was not good. The bouncers refused entry to us in the room, where we were part of the hospital and screening test.” she said.

Dr Sandep Jasuja, head of the department at Birla Cancer Centre said that “Since I was inside the screening room, I was unaware of bouncers’ misbehaviour with patients and hospital staff. If it has happened, then it’s wrong.”

Later in the day, Rajeev Khanna, Vice President of the Rajasthan Royals team, apologised for the misbehaviour of bouncers with patients and hospital staff. He said, “I am sorry for their behaviour and inconvenience caused by the bouncers. We will be careful in future while visiting a public place like hospital.”
