The heat is on. And the corridors of power are simmering. Two of top posts of governance are awaiting chief minister’s nod as their tenure is approaching to and end this month. The Chief Secretary N C Goel is scheduled to hang his boots on April 30 while RPSC (Rajasthan Public Service Commission) chief Radheshyam Garg too is completing his term in the month end.

According to sources, NC Goel may get an extension while RPSC chairman Radhesyam Garg is much likely to be replaced.

Goel, who is called ‘performer’ in the power corridor, has played a key role in the execution of government’s ambitious projects including inauguration of the Barmer refinery in his three months short tenure so far. “He has emerged as one of the most effective officers in the Raje government,” said a retired chief secretary. As Raje government enters into final leg before the assembly elections, experts believe that it may not risk of replace Goel. He may get extension for three months so that pending and ongoing schemes can be executed in a fast track for the poll benefits,” the retired bureaucrat said.

The extension of Goel’s services depends on the union ministry of personnel which takes the final call on the recommendation of the state government. Earlier, Raje government has been able to get the tenure of former Chief secretary CS Rajan extended twice for three months each. Post-retirement Rajan is currently working closely with the state government as the vice chairman of CM Advisory council.

Replacement of RPSC chairman Garg is another task before the Raje government next month, May. This is a posting which the state government uses to appease a particular class or community for political benefits. This post is awarded without taking into consideration any academic background.

So, at this time when the state goes for elections Raje may hand pick a candidate from reserved category to bring voters from that community to party’s fold.

But then there will be a big challenge for the new chairman of RPSC. He will have task to execute thousands of government jobs for which the advertisements have been released or are in process. When Raje government appointed Garg, a surgeon by profession, in December last year, it was well aware of searching another candidate for this plum posting in the election year. Chairman's post is a constitutional appointment. The Governor appoints the head with a fixed term of six years or 62 years of age, whichever is early. In this context, Garg, who is born on May 2, 1956, is going to be retired next month when he completes 62 years.
