The farmers’ agitation in Rajasthan was sort of low hanging fruit for Congress. However, the major Opposition party seems to be suffering from inertia and fail to take timely action to grab the leadership of the agitation. This lapse on the part of the Congress, gave CPI (M), which was almost disappeared from the political landscape in the state, an opportunity on a platter to revive its fortune in the state.

Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Sachin Pilot on Wednesday announced an agitation on farmers demands.

The young leader who shepherded the stir revealed that party leaders will assemble in Baran on October 3 to support farmers’ issues under ‘Kisan Nyay Yatra’ and will carry a foot march to cover 96 km via road towards Jhalawar, where a massive conference will be held. Chief minister Vasundhara Raje’s Assembly constituency-Jhalrapatan- falls under Jhalawar district, and her son Dushyant Singh is the present Lok Sabha MP of Jhalawar-Baran Lok Sabha constituency.

Three demands that Pilot is raising are: complete crop loan waiver to farmers, 50% profit to farmers beside (minimum supporting price (MSP) and taxing 18% GST on farming equipment which is now 28. The pilot claimed that these demands are more pro-farmers.

The recent farmers’ stir, which was led by Akhil Bhartiya Kisan Sabha- the farmer organisation of the CPM in Sikar, had raised the demands but the government cajoled the farmers leaders reaching on a formula in which a high powered committee was constituted to report a loan waiver up to Rs50,000 crore to farmers, said Pilot.

“Our fight will be conclusive. We will force the government to accept all our demands. We have selected Hadauti region for agitation as most of farmers’ suicide have taken place there,” claimed Pilot. The statements of Pilot show that result of his party’s agitation will be different from the one led by CPI leader Amraram. It clearly shows that party is planning to take a political mileage now on the issue which so far appears to lost to the CPI. Under the agitation by the CPI body, thousands of farmers protested in many districts of north Rajasthan demanding crop loan waiver.
