Communal clashes erupt in Jaitaran

Now this time Jaitaran has fallen victim to stone pelting which resulted in full-blown clashes. The ugly incident happened when a Hanuman Jayanti procession was passing through a minority area of Jaitaran,100 kms from Jodhpur.

Some miscreants pelted stones at the procession sparking violence. People of both the communities faced off and the situation became tense when police intervened.

The two group clashed, pelted stones and set shops and vehicles on fire creating a site of terror. Police had to resort to force and fire tear gas shells to disperse the crowd but not before they set a bus and a tractor on fire. Several shops were also gutted. The violence spread to adjoining Sojat city also. District Collector Sudhir Sharma has imposed Section 144 in Jaitaran and Sojat and Internet has been banned.   

“We have appealed to the people to maintain peace and calm,” said Sudhir Sharma.

Meanwhile, the sudden escalation of violence forced people to run away and save their lives. It resulted in a curfew-like situation in the city. Meanwhile, the miscreants also raised slogans like ‘Pakistan Zindabad’.

This created communal tension in Jaitaran town. Later, the police used force to disperse the crowd and deployed a large number of personnel there. By then, a dozen people were injured and many vehicles, including five buses, and shops were set on fire. The situation was tense till late evening.

After the incident, the violence spread to Sojat town also. Two police teams were deployed at both the places.

RAC was immediately deployed on the spot. A large number of people from a particular community gathered outside a religious place. The police officers interacted with the people and vacated the place in a bid to ease tension.

In the last 15 days, there have been several incidents of communal clashes in Rajasthan. A couple of days back, miscreants in Bundi pelted stone at a Ram Navami procession which escalated into a clash with members from the community indulging in arson and violence. The situation in Bundi is still tense.

A week ago, Tonk also witnessed communal clashes when some unidentified youth pelted stones at a Bhagwa rally. The situation in Tonk is still tense. Udaipur and Rajsamand has been under tension since December when Shambhu Lal Raigar hacked a Muslim labourer.
